Britons looking to get away for their summer break have been urged to make sure they have travel insurance to avoid being hit in the pocket.
Leading price comparison website Moneysupermarket.com has conducted research which shows that 81 per cent of UK holiday-makers fall ill while on their travels.
However, only just over half (53 per cent) of those surveyed in the study admitted to taking out insurance every time they head overseas.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research for the website, said: "The excitement of getting away and spending time in the sun seems to push travel insurance to the back of holidaymakers' minds. Taking this risk is not such a good idea.
"Travel insurance is vital for claiming on cancellations, lost cash, public liability and providing emergency medical treatment, and gives you added peace of mind should anything go wrong."
Mr Gerrard also added that with annual worldwide cover for a family of four available for as little as £40, there can be no excuse for not securing a policy - even in the current tough economic climate.
