British holidaymakers have been urged to ensure that they have adequate travel insurance to avoid an expensive disaster in the shape of losing their luggage.
There have been many high-profile cases of lost luggage this summer, not least with the debacle surrounding the opening of Terminal 5.
In some instances, people have been reunited with their luggage within one to three days, but other travellers have been forced to buy new items on arrival at their holiday destination.
David Neave, director of general insurance at the Co-operative Insurance, said: "Losing your luggage before you even get to your holiday destination is a practical and expensive nightmare especially if you're only away for a few days because that could mean you have no luggage for the entire duration of your holiday.
"If you have adequate travel insurance and receipts for electrical goods and other such items you will be able to claim for any loss."
The need for
backpacker travel insurance is particularly important for gappers heading off on world trips, considering they may be on small budgets and planning to live out of their backpacks for several months.
