A spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that travel insurance would ensure that they will be able to reclaim money if they are unable to fly due to swine flu.
She advises travellers to buy insurance early, to ensure that they are covered if they become ill.
"If they already have travel insurance in place and they contract swine flu after they have taken out travel insurance, and they are unable to travel, then they will be covered," she said.
ABI's warning follows news from airlines including Virgin Atlantic and British Airways that passengers suspected of carrying the virus could be turned away at check-in.
To help identify passengers with a fever, come countries including China and Australia have introduced thermal body scanners.
