According to sector body the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), the industry is far better prepared for further economic problems than it was a year ago.
Ian Bradley, a spokesperson for AITO, said: "Bookings are still coming in slowly, but there's definitely confidence there they've seen more enquiries, and things are looking up."
His comments follow the release of a new survey published by Advantage Travel Centres this week, which found 63 per cent of industry figures surveyed are either quite or very optimistic for the future.
This suggests operators are remaining positive despite 82 per cent believing that the downturn will continue to have a significant impact on business in the next two years.
Mr Bradley added: "It is far better to be cagey and maybe expect the worst, budget accordingly and if you do better than that it's a nice bonus."
