Teenagers going on a gap year can improve their chances when applying for university places, it has been claimed.
With increasing numbers of school leavers opting to further their education at university, competition for places is intense and a volunteering charity claims that worthwhile projects can be a big bonus.
According to Lattitude, which specialises in volunteering projects around the world for back packers aged 17-25, it is advisable to do more with the experience than just buying a round the world ticket.
Ben Clifton, a spokesperson for Lattitude, said that a volunteer project could add "teaching skills, leadership" and other qualities to a CV.
"It really can make you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs or university places," he added.
He also advised back packers to do some research on where to go and what projects to get involved in.
Anyone considering a gap year should also conduct their own research into the best backpacker insurance policies on the market to ensure they are covered for every eventuality while on the road.
