Visitors taking taxis in London could buy online travel insurance

Backpackers planning on taking a black London taxi while visiting the English capital could first buy gap year travel insurance.

More than 30 per cent of voters who took part in an online survey rated black London cabs as the world's best, according to Hotels.com, with New York taxis coming in a distant second with 17 per cent.

John Thomas, chairman of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, said that taking a London cab forms an integral part of the experience for many tourists, some of whom may have purchased cheap travel insurance.

Mr Thomas said: "Getting in the back of a world famous black taxi, with a world famous London cabbie is part of the experience, pretty much like the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the red bus and the red telephone box."

He added that the black cab's success in the online poll reflects the years of training undertaken by drivers in the capital.

Over 26 million overnight visitors visit London every year, according to tourism organisation Visit London.
