Manchester has won huge praise from the Lonely Planet's Great Britain Guide 2009 for being a modern city that is a serious contender with urban centres across Europe and has embraced technology on a level unmatched elsewhere in Britain.
Bars, restaurants and tourist attractions all receive positive feedback in a way that could attract more backpackers and other budget travellers to its hotels and hostels.
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester city council, told the Manchester Evening News: "It is nothing we did not know. The guide is very clear in saying that in terms of UK cities, Manchester is leading the way. It is easy to blow your own trumpet but this is independent. It's a fantastic report."
