Online travel insurance customers may be among those with a yearning for sunshine and sandy beaches this winter, despite the economic downturn.
According to travel agent On the Beach, many British holidaymakers felt dismayed by the dismal weather over the summer and now plan to make up for it with a winter getaway.
Alistair Daly, marketing director at the firm, said: "Our bookings show that many people will travel to winter sun destinations such as Turkey, the Canary Islands, Tunisia and Morocco."
Recent figures released by domestic tourism body VisitEngland found that holidays in England in the first six months of 2009 were up by 14 per cent, while outbound travel saw a 17 per cent drop.
Commenting on the statistics, Mr Daly suggested that they did not necessarily show that people were giving up on foreign holidays, but instead were taking a number of shorter breaks to different destinations.
Research from comparison site travelsupermarket.com found that 44 per cent of people surveyed would pay 25 per cent more for holidays abroad if they guaranteed better weather.
