According to a tourism expert, conservation breaks are becoming increasingly popular as people discover the benefits of getting out of their comfort zone and learning new skills.
A spokesperson for the National Trust for Scotland, which runs a number of activity holidays, said a trip of a week or more can help volunteers learn more intensively than they could during weekend shifts.
"Most people are probably in the younger age bracket, but it appeals to people of all ages. There is very much a desire for people to engage with the outdoors," she added.
For those looking for adventures outside the UK, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) offers a variety of placements ranging from six months to two years, for workers with professional skills.
VSO says primary school teachers with at least three years' experience are currently in high demand.
